Thanka Art
I am Ajay Lama, now running a Thanka Art (Tibetan art) business in Nepal. I have faced many challenges and struggles to reach this position and here is the story of my life.
I was born in 1988 at daduwa-6-ramechhap which is a very remote district in Nepal situated near to the Mount Everest district of Solukhumbu. My family was very poor. My father was a farmer and I was the youngest member of a family of five. My mother worked very hard in the field to feed us, and to pay the school fees.
When I was young I worked on my family’s farm. Besides, I also used to go into the forest and collect firewood. I joined my village school later on, and I used to read and do my homework at night after working in the field.
Life in the village was very hard, and there was no way to earn income, so in 2004 I left my old life to move to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, to make my future brighter. In Kathmandu, my elder sister was living in the Bhakatpur, near to Kathmandu city. I stayed with my sister and started to search for a job. I found a job in a Thanka shop where my starting salary was 1500 rupees (about £13) per month. I also joined a local college to undergo further study.
After a time I started painting and learned to paint Thanka Art. I got the idea of selling and painting Thanka Art because I noticed that many visitors from overseas would come to the school, look at the paintings and buy them. While I was at the School, I met and made friends from overseas who wanted to help me make a success of my business. After 2 years working hard to increase my skills and experience of Thanka painting, and developing my ideas about the business, I made a start, with the help of Janne (Poland), Apolo (Spain) and Schenk (Switzerland), and a few others. They believed in me because of my enthusiasm, faithfulness and my hard work.
